Poll Relief Bits

Poll relief bits are designed to reduce pressure on one of the horse’s most sensitive areas: the poll, located just behind the ears. For horses who become tense, resistant, or uncomfortable under traditional bridle pressure, poll relief designs can offer a softer, more ergonomic alternative that supports relaxation and clearer communication.

Poll relief bits use specialised cheekpieces—such as drop cheek, Baucher styles, articulated sidepieces, or anatomically shaped shanks—to redistribute rein pressure away from the poll. Instead of the bridle tightening downward when the rider takes a contact, these designs lift or neutralise poll pressure, allowing the horse to work more freely through the neck and topline.

Why a Horse May Prefer Poll Relief

  • Reduced sensitivity – ideal for horses who react strongly to poll pressure or show signs of discomfort when bridled

  • Improved relaxation – encourages a softer neck, easier stretching, and less bracing

  • Clearer communication – removes unwanted pressure so rein aids feel more precise and consistent

  • Better acceptance of the contact – helpful for horses who toss their head, evade, or struggle to settle into the bridle

  • Enhanced freedom of movement – supports a more natural outline without forcing the horse into a frame

Whilst they do relieve poll pressure, curb pressure can still be applied via the use of a curb chain or a back strap.
